{"id":5225,"date":"2026-05-07T15:56:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T12:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deboll.eu\/zashto-kashlitsata-se-usilva-noshtem\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T13:45:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T10:45:27","slug":"why-does-a-cough-get-worse-at-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deboll.eu\/en\/why-does-a-cough-get-worse-at-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Why does a cough get worse at night?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7 reasons few people think of \u2014 but that matter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nighttime coughing is one of the most unpleasant experiences.<br>During the day we cough and keep moving.<br>But in the evening, when everything goes quiet\u2026 that\u2019s exactly when the cough wakes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many parents say:<br>\u201cDuring the day they barely cough, but once they lie down \u2014 it doesn\u2019t stop.\u201d<br>And it\u2019s true.<br>But the reasons often remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The throat becomes drier at night<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we sleep, we start to:<br>\u2022 swallow less often<br>\u2022 moisten the throat less<br>\u2022 breathe through the mouth if the nose is blocked<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result?<br>The mucosa dries out \u2014 and dry mucosa is easily irritated.<br>This is the most common \u201csilent\u201d culprit behind nighttime coughing fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lying down changes everything<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we lie down:<br>\u2022 mucus collects more easily at the back of the throat<br>\u2022 it drains more slowly<br>\u2022 it creates a \u201ctickle\u201d sensation that triggers the cough reflex<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child may sleep calmly, but the body is trying to clear what has built up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mucociliary clearance slows down at night<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the body\u2019s natural mechanism that \u201cpushes\u201d mucus outward.<br>At night it:<br>\u2022 works more slowly<br>\u2022 is less effective<br>\u2022 can\u2019t move mucus quickly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the result is\u2026<br>coughing with the feeling that \u201csomething is stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dry room air increases irritation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially in winter.<br>Heating:<br>\u2022 dries the air<br>\u2022 dries the mucosa<br>\u2022 makes the throat more sensitive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In children, the effect is even stronger because their mucosa is thinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Throat nerve receptors are more sensitive in the evening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a little-known fact.<br>Late in the evening:<br>\u2022 the nervous system shifts rhythm<br>\u2022 throat receptors become more reactive<br>\u2022 they perceive irritation more strongly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why the cough can seem \u201cdeeper\u201d and \u201clouder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflux can trigger coughing\u2026 even without heartburn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many parents are surprised, but:<br>With reflux, a small amount of acid or stomach contents can reach:<br>\u2022 the back of the throat<br>\u2022 the vocal cords<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026and cause a dry, persistent cough that worsens at night.<br>And often there is neither pain nor heartburn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a cough wakes your child at 2 a.m\u2026<br>or when you can\u2019t sleep because of irritation\u2026<br>it\u2019s important to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not the body being \u201cdramatic.\u201d<br>It doesn\u2019t happen \u201cjust like that.\u201d<br>There are reasons.
